Beach erosion on Thudufushi
NB: This page is a snapshot of the beaches in mid-January 2020. The sand moves around the island with the seasons, and over the years. They will look
different at other times.
The beach outside the restaurant is severely eroded. Compare with the next photo, taken from more or less the
same spot 13 months previously. The ground staff have planted some palm trees to stabilise the sand, but they are looking precarious.
This is the same view 13 months previously, in Dec 2018.
The foundations of this room (around room 40 or so) are severely threatened. The maintenance staff have used lots of sandbags to try and protect it.
The maintenance staff have deployed (and continued to deploy while we were there) some makeshift breakwaters made from wood and sandbags.
Around room 36 or so - note the almost horizontal palm tree, now supported on an A-frame because its roots are threatened. Compare with the following photo,
taken from more or less the same spot 13 months previously.
Again, this photo was taken from more or less the same spot 13 months previously in Dec 2018.
Taken from outside our room, 26, looking to the right over room 27's barely adequate beach to the rooms with no beach at all and the palm tree propped up with an A-frame.
The Maintenance team continue to fill sandbags with sand from beside the main jetty.
